Early one winter morning in 1992, commercial pilot Alex Gorelik looked down through a manhole into a horribly smelly dirty sewer in St. Petersburg, Russia. He didn't want to go down into it, yet he was filled with compassion for the children who lived inside the hole. Thousands of lonely, cold, sick, hungry abandoned children from 5 to 18 years old lived in the sewer systems, basements, and attics of the city. Hidden from the world, these kids supportedthemselves through crime and selling their bodies. They often escaped their reality by using alcohol, heroin or sniffing shoe polish.
As Alex hesitated at the entrance to the sewer, he realized that this was exactly what Jesus did for mankind. He left the splendor of heaven, humbled Himself and sought us out with His love. So Alex crawled down and began to tell the children about their heavenly Father, who cared for them even when their physical fathers did not.
Later when police questioned Alex about what he was doing, the children yelled "Leave him alone! He is a Holy Man!"
This was the beginning of his outreach to street children and the later establishment of a soup kitchen and orphanage in St. Petersburg in 1993.
In 1997, a pediatrician came on a 2-month volunteer mission to the city, where she met Alex and fell in love. Alex and Marta were married in 1998 and founded VOICE OF THE CHILDREN the same year.
Over the next 15 years, they have not only ministered to 1000’s of kids in Russia, but they have expanded their ministry into Mexico, Honduras, Louisiana, California and Cuba.
For the last 9 years they have focused on Cuba-building relationships and walking with local pastors and churches. Cuba is going through many troubles, but is also experiencing a tremendous growth spiritually. New Christians from every walk of life are streaming into house churches, and planting new ones. They are touching their neighbors with great outpourings of love and service. It is incredible to stand by our Cuban brothers and sisters as the Holy Spirit moves dramatically through them.
